Often people are afraid of the unknown. It's why there are many homophobic people. Perhaps they're terrified of their own feelings for people of the same sex because they were indoctrinated thinking being homosexual is bad.
It's why they respond as if stung by a hornet when someone laughs at homophobic people. Which leads to hilarious self owns:

Fake Christians want all references to homosexuality banned 'because if children see a gay person they might turn gay themselves!'
